Whereas the Town of Grimsby’s Master Plan for Parks, Recreation and Culture completed in 2019 identified a municipal indoor pool as the number one priority and this priority was not included in the Peach King Centre’s expansion plans; and Whereas the following motion voted upon unanimously in favour by the previous Council on September 7, 2021 by Reginald Freake is no longer valid as a result of a new council being elected in the Fall of 2022 and needs to be addressed as part of future recreation planning; and Whereas the Town of Grimsby is a vibrant growing community with pent- up demand for year round aquatic programs for all ages of residents; and Whereas in the Town of Grimsby, swimming is a popular activity that is enjoyed by all ages, and indoor pools should be a core recreational and health related service; and Whereas in recent surveys around the country, 60% of households participate in swimming at indoor aquatic facilities, including learn-to-swim, special interest (e.g. diving, synchronized swimming etc.), swimming leadership, aquatic fitness and community rentals; and Whereas currently the Lion’s Club community pool is only accessible 2-3 months of the year; and because it’s an outdoor pool, is also hampered by weather and is a closure factor even in summer. The YMCA is private, expensive and inaccessible for most residents, therefore our residents must travel outside of Grimsby in the off-season and be wait-listed in other nearby communities for some programming,
