Whereas micro forests, also known as mini forests or Miyawaki forests, have been proven to be highly successful in restoring degraded land, enhancing biodiversity, and sequestering carbon; and Whereas these dense, diverse ecosystems grow rapidly and can reach maturity in a fraction of the time it takes for traditional forests to develop; and Whereas by harnessing the power of micro forests, we can effectively combat deforestation, mitigate the impacts of climate change, and create healthier, more resilient communities; and Whereas as stewards of our environment, it is our responsibility to take proactive measures to safeguard our natural resources and promote ecological resilience; and Whereas by investing in the creation of a micro forest, we not only fulfill our commitment to environmental sustainability, but also foster a sense of community pride and engagement; and Whereas this motion is fully supported by the Town of Grimsby’s Green Advisory Committee, further underscoring the importance and relevance of this initiative to our local community. Therefore, be it resolved that Niagara Regional Council take meaningful action towards a greener and more sustainable future by supporting this motion and allocating the necessary resources to plant a micro forest on the land used for the new water reservoir in Grimsby.
